History and Deeds of Legion of House Manticore

The Legion of House Manticore was founded in the summer of 1996 by a few guys (and no, I'm not being sexist about it, it just happened to be a bunch of men) who thought it would be really cool to play D&D for real. I mean, just because that was our Saturday afternoons and evenings, (well, also into the early mornings of Sunday as well, you know, six or seven...) Any way, so there we were, a bunch of Military Guys (oh, did I mention that we were in the Military? God Save Our Souls...) who decided instead of being the conformists that we have to be on a daily basis, we didn't join a standing Fighting Company and created our own. Now, you may ask yourselves, why call yourself the Legion? Well, it's the only portion of a name we could all agree upon, that's why. As for House Manticore... Well, it sounded cool and we hoped and prayed that I could come up with a really cool symbol of a Manticore that would look nice and stand out. Well I did manage to come up with a symbol (after about a year) and now that my skill with a sewing machine has greatly improved since I began this whole little venture, sewing one hell of a manticore on a tabard is no problem. So, besides looking all sorts of good on the battlefield, all of us in the Legion can fight pretty well, and let me tell you, that took some time...

For a little more clarity, this is a message that was sent to a friend of Legion as to what the Legion really is:

Legion was first founded as a Ducal Regents Guard... When that Regent stepped down, Legion formed into a Fighting Company (Unit) that developed into more of a independent group than anything that tries to expand upon the medieval/fantasy genre. Anyway, since foundation, Legion hasn't followed a lord (or lady) but it's own Commanders that truly only aspire to bring honor and glory only to Legion and not to individual. This starts with the Captain Commander on down. Also, I want all Legionnaires only ties with the Legion and Legion only, it makes us stronger that way. With the fundamentals that I and the original founders of Legion put forth, every time a Regiment is raised in the name of Legion, it's members are infallible and our strength comes from the great bond that we create within each of the members for each other

Foundation Legion:

The Legion and House Manticore were founded upon the Twenty Second day of July, Nineteen Hundred and Ninety-six, with the founding members of...

Within the first few months, the Legion set their mark upon the whole of Amtgard, although small in size, tactics and the ability to take care and win in a combat situation by combining with other forces and always showing up looking their best in well made garb.

Respect for the Legion was well earned in the Borderlands of the Kingdom of the Emerald Hills on the Eleventh of August, Nineteen Hundred and Ninety-six, the enemy was well met and victory earned after glorious combat which led to the occupation of the Borderlands for a time by the Legion. Spoils, in the form of Dr. Pepper, were presented to the current King of the Celestial Kingdom, King Logan, during the Wetlands Mid Reign on the Twenty-fourth of August, Nineteen Hundred and Ninety-six.

And thus the Glory of Legion and House Manticore doth prevail over all adversaries and the history of our Glorious Legion will continue on...

Legion History during Amtgard: by Cpt. Commander Corwin

Throughout the history of the Legion there has been many skirmishes, numerous quests, countless battles and two major campaigns. The first major campaign took place around the birth of the Legion. The campaign was against the Kingdom of the Emerald Hills which took place in the realm known as the Borderlands. As usual there were only a hand full of Legionnaires to fight the battle, but the ranks were filled with the Legions allies, the Teutonics and the ModorRocks. The Legion took Command, by order of the Duchess of Dragons Haven, with Cpt-Commander Corwin in charge. The battle was glorious, the Legion defeated the armies of Emerald Hills, wave after wave. By mid afternoon, the Legion had the Nobles of Emerald Hills and their army commander cornered. The Enemy Commander challenged Cpt-Commander Corwin to single combat for the lives of his Noblemen. Being Honour bound as all Legionnaires are, Corwin accepted the enemy Commanders challenge. The fight was astonishing, two skilled swordsmen locked in mortal combat for the Honour of both kingdoms. In the end, Corwin stood victorious, but mortally wounded. The battle was not over yet, a band of Sarisans turned traitor and attacked in an attempt to kill the Duchess of Dragons Haven. Although wounded, Cpt-Commander Corwin rushed to the defense of the Duchess. Legionnaires and their Allies quickly moved to follow. Even the remaining Sarisans go to the defense, for they know that if the Legion is in combat, the traitors were sure to be defeated. During the defense of the Duchess, Cpt-Commander Corwin fell, overcome by his wounds. Sergeant Marcus came to his rescue, standing over his fallen commander, he fought in defense with a rage that would make a Khorne bezerker cower in fear. At the same time a lone archer broke through the lines and took a shot at the Duchess. It was Legionnaire Darrion who would come to the rescue of the Duchess by jumping in between her and the archer. The arrow hit Darrion, but he was able to dispatch the attacker before he have in to his wound. The traitors were defeated at the hands of Legion and it would be Captain Geobaldi that would capture the Traitors leader for trail and punishment. No other traitor was left standing.

After the defeat of the Emerald Hills in the Borderlands, the Legion earned the respect of all who bore witness of their valour in combat. The Duchess proclaimed the Legion heroes tot he Corwin The Legion then began the occupation of the Borderlands of which the people gladly accepted, for they knew the Legion would restore order to the land. Cpt-Commander Corwin and the occupying Legionnaires met the nobles to learn about the ruling house in the Borderlands. The House of the Ishide Sisterhood was the reigning household, it was made up of Sorcerers and Mages with their bonded warriors as defenders. They were no match for the Legionnaires, which quickly defeated the warriors and dispelled the magic users. In a matter of minutes the house was overrun and under Legion control. Sister superior, the head of the house Surcame to the Legion and had this to say to Cpt-Commander Corwin: "When I see the Legionnaires, I see courage, valour and bravery beyond compare. I see compassion, commitment and loyalty... but to whom. You are heroes of the crown, but do you answer to it? Or is there a higher power you take order form, the King perhaps?" Corwin replies with a smile and said, "You may come to learn the answers to that question in time. But not today". The occupation of the Borderlands lasted up to the Wetlands Mid-Reign, where a new King was crowned for Emerald Hills. It was there that the Ishide Sister Superior would learn of whom the Legion was working for, when the spoils of the campaign were presented to King Logan T. Black, the current reign of the Celestial Kingdom. The Legion had been specifically chosen by the King to invade the Borderlands of the Emerald Hills and occupy the conquered territory for a time. The Kings order was to prevent a war that was expected, do to tension between the two kingdoms. It worked, but the invasion was too much for the Borderlands. Their armies were dwindling and began to disperse. Those who remained were not enough to maintain order after the Legion ended the occupation of the territory. The Borderlands erupted into civil war as chaos set in. In the end it would all crumble to nothing, ashes of a war torn land left smoldering and unattended.
